Curaçao is one of the best places in the Caribbean to get underwater, and you often don't even need a boat. Healthy fringing reefs start just meters from shore along the island's calm southern coast, visibility is usually excellent, and sea turtles are a regular sight.
Whether you've never snorkeled or you're logging your hundredth dive, here's where to go.
01Why Curaçao is so good underwater
- Reef right off the beach: a drop-off runs along much of the leeward coast, so you can walk in and be over coral in minutes.
- Calm, clear water: the south and west coasts are sheltered from the trade winds.
- Protected areas: much of the southeast coast falls within the Curaçao Marine Park.
- Year-round: water stays warm, roughly 78–84°F.
02Best snorkel spots
Playa Piskado: sea turtles
The island's most reliable turtle encounter. Fishermen clean fish at the pier, and turtles gather nearby. Swim out gently and watch from a respectful distance.
Playa Lagun
Follow the rocky walls of this narrow cove to see parrotfish, sergeant majors, and often turtles and octopus.
Playa Porto Marie
A managed beach with rentals and a double reef offshore. Easy entry and lots to see.
Tugboat (Caracasbaai)
A small tugboat sits upright in shallow water, covered in coral and fish. It's shallow enough to see clearly from the surface, making it one of the easiest wreck snorkels in the Caribbean. Snorkel tours often stop here too.
Klein Curaçao
The uninhabited island's clear water and turtle population make it a highlight of any boat trip.
A well-fitting mask and fins make every beach a snorkel spot.
03Best dive sites
| Site | Highlights | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Tugboat | Shallow coral-covered wreck, lots of fish, great for photos | Beginner |
| Mushroom Forest | Large mushroom-shaped coral heads, often rated among the island's best | Beginner–intermediate |
| Superior Producer | A cargo-ship wreck sitting upright near Willemstad's harbor | Advanced |
| Playa Kalki / Alice in Wonderland | Coral garden and reef wall near Westpunt | All levels |
| Watamula | Wild northwestern point with rich reef; currents can be strong | Advanced |
Conditions change; always dive with a local operator or get a current site briefing.
04Shore diving 101
Curaçao, like neighboring Bonaire, is famous for shore diving: rent a truck and tanks, drive to a marked site and walk in. It's flexible and affordable, but plan carefully:
- Get an orientation from a dive shop first, and ask about entries, exits and currents.
- Dive with a buddy and stick to your certification limits.
- Wear sturdy booties for rocky entries.
- Never leave valuables in the truck.
Compare shore-diving packages and guided boat dives with PADI/SSI shops.
05Boat & snorkel trips
If you're not a diver, a half- or full-day snorkel cruise is the easiest way in. Popular options include Klein Curaçao day trips and shorter catamaran cruises that stop at the Tugboat and nearby reefs. Many include lunch, drinks and gear.

07FAQ
Can beginners snorkel in Curaçao?
Yes. Playa Piskado, Porto Marie and the Tugboat are calm, shallow and easy, especially in the morning.
Do I need to be certified to dive?
For independent dives, yes. If you aren't, many dive shops offer "discover scuba" intro dives with an instructor, or full open water certification courses.
What's the best time of year to dive?
Diving is good year-round. Late summer and fall often bring the calmest seas and best visibility.
